November 1, 2006 - Test Fuel Tanks for leaks |
||||||
Now that the fuel tank access plate and sender units are screwed on and sealed with Proseal, the tanks are ready for leak testing. I had ordered a leak test kit from Van's a long, long time ago. Time to try it out. .
All that's in the Test Kit is the blue aluminum fixture on the right
that covers the fuel inlet fixture.

And this tire valve thing that screws into the opening where the fuel
drain goes.

The instructions that came with the kit lists two methods. I tried the "balloon" method first. You put a ballon over the fuel vent fixture. Then you pump air into the tank using a bicycle tire pump. I did that but I couldn't get the balloon to "blow" up. The tank definitely had air in it, so I sprayed soapy water over all the seams and rivets, looking for leaks. I didn't see any.
