June 27, 2009 -  Cape May with Bones

I have been meaning for a long time to take my friend Jeff B. -- Bones -- flying in the RV.  We finally got together today.

I saw this ship at dock from the Key Bridge driving to the airport, but it was already heading out into the Bay when I took off.

We're experiencing summer weather early this year; it was hot and hazy.

The good Dr. Bones at Bennett Field nearly Salisbury, Maryland, ready to do some aviating.

We cut across Delaware Bay at Pt. Lewnes heading to Cape May County Airport (WWD), Wildwood, NJ.

I've never been to this airport; flew over it a couple of times during Phase I.  It has an on-field restaurant and a museum.

We had a nice breakfast inthe restaurant which was pretty busy.

This airport used to be Naval Air Station Wildwood during World War II.  It was here US Navy dive bomber pilots learned  to put ordnance on target.

There is a museum in this big hangar.

The museum's showpiece is this big F-14 Tomcat.  The US Navy no longer operates the F-14 and you see them at museums all over the place.

Nice nose art.

First time I've actually seen the 20 mm cannon that is on most US fighter planes.

This T-28 primary trainer looks pretty battle-worn.

There was an aerobatic competition going on all weekend at this airport.  The guy I took my aerobatic training with, Adam Cope, was competing, although I didn't see him.  He did well, though, second place.

There was just about every type of aerobatic airplane including a couple of these German pre-WWII Bucker Jungmeisters.

Extra 300L

Christian Eagle

I was surprised to learn that this Lazer Z-230 is a kitplane.

Russian built Sukoi SU-31

I asked the pilot what this was but can't remember.

After takeoff we headed up the Jersey Shore to see Atlantic City.  But strangely enough, fog was covering the beach so there wasn't much point in continuing.

Heading back across the Delaware Bay.

It was fun to finally give Bones a ride in the RV and I think he enjoyed it.  Plus Cape May is a nice airport.
