April 9, 2004 - Rudder

The Rudder Trailing Edge wedge is clecoed to this board in preparation for countersinking. You can see the countersink bit in the drill.

At first I was a little nervous about the countersinking. But after the first 20 or so, you get pretty good at it and the nervousness goes away.
The big thing with the rudder trailing edge is to keep it straight. In preparation for this, I fashioned brackets, made out of aluminum angle, that will keep the trailing edge straight while epoxying together and riveting. This image shows me match-drilling holes in the angle using the wedge as a guide.
Now we're finally starting the fun part: riveting the rudder together. First step is to rivet the rectangular reinforcement pieces to the rudder spar. I like using the Main Squeeze to rivet: the rivets always come out great! It's not always that way with the rivet gun and bucking bar.
