October 23, 2004 - Left Wing

Before I can start riveting the leading edge and skins to the left wing, there are still a bunch of little things I have to do.

After reading some posts on the Yahoo RV-7 group, I bought this "Alodine Pen" from Stein Air. I used it to protect all the countersunk holes on the main spar.

I used the alodine pen on all these holes; hopefully it will protect the metal from corrosion. Who knows? Can't hurt, I suppose.

I also installed the plastic conduit that I bought from Vans. As others have remarked, it was a pain to install. Took me over half an hour. The reason is that it fits the holes I drilled very tightly. You have to pull with one hand and pull with the other to get it through.

I bought pre-built fuel tanks from Vans. Given how long it has taken me to build the left wing, I can't tell you how happy I am to not have to build the fuel tanks, which by all accounts is a major ordeal. I did have to install nutplates on the fuel tank Z-angles, however. These nutplates are pretty important. They hold the wing tank to the main wing spar.
All done. The nutplates are on the bottom side of the Z-angle. As is usually the case with nutplates, you have to countersink the rivet holes so that the rivet manufactured head is flush.
