August 9, 2014 - Smoketown Fly-In |
I was able to make it to my third Smoketown Fly-in in a row (along with Bruce B.). Weather was good for August, maybe a little hazy. One of the nice things about Smoketown is that a really good photographer photographs each plane as it comes in for landing. Another nice thing is the free T-shirt you get. Very nice quality T-shirt and a different design/color each year. Here is yours truly. |
A Xenos kitplane motorglider also flew in. I saw this plane at the Golden Age Air Museum fly-in once. Those are some long wings, aren't they? I built a pair for Bruce in my basement a few years ago.

The hangar where breakfast, and later, lunch could be had.
A better look at the food line. Good food. Everything was very well organized with lots of friendly volunteers.
The Bruces having a serious discussion about an aviation-related topic with the magnificent 1929 Fairchild 71 in the background.
The issue has been resolved and they are ready to enjoy the fly-in.
The Fairchild won the AirVenture 2014 Grand Champion award for antique airplanes which is quite an honor. Here is the statue they received.
Lots of airplanes fly-in for this event.
A big ex-Navy T-28.
P11 | ||||||
Nice looking Harmon Rocket. Aptly named.
I don't know what this plane with the unusual empennage is.
Colt Tri-Pacer
The Xenos motorglider. Bruce has one of these and was anxious to talk with the builder/pilot -- Michael J.
A good look at the panel. Michael has been flying this plane for three or four years now.
The long, polished wings looked good in the sunlight.
This Xenos is powered by Sonex's AeroVee engine. This is what Bruce's has also.
Bruce wishes his Xenos was airworthy too!
I liked the paint job on this RV-7A.
This RV needs a paint job.
A Zenith CH-750 Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL). If I was going to build another kitplane, this would probably be it.
The fly-in even had public transportation.
This is what they need at AirVenture.
Don't see too many ultralights anymore but this Kolb made it.
