August 2, 2014 - Spot Landing & Mountain Flying Practice |
||||||
I went flying for a couple of hours on Saturday and spent most of that time practicing for a long cross-country I'm planning in late August. The first thing I worked on was spot-landings. I practiced at Massey Aerodrome, a nice grass field which I had to myself. I tried the spot-landing technique described in Sparky Imeson's Mounting Flying Bible but it wasn't working too well in the RV. I made some adjustments and soon I was making some nice landings in the first 1,000 feet of the runway. |

For my last landing, I made an approach on the short Massey runway shown below. My wheels touched but I did a touch and go instead of a full stop. Still, I believed I could have gotten stopped on the runway. I was feeling much better about my spot and short field landings by the time I was through.

After Massey, I did some airwork including stalls and slow flight. Then I practiced steep turns at slow flight to simulate turning in a narrow canyon. The RV turns on a dime at slow speed. It was good practice and confidence builder. | ||||||
