ADIZ Liberation Day at Essex Skypark
September 1, 2007

Today was a glorious day at Essex Skypark.  The ADIZ boundaries were redrawn on August 30th.  The ADIZ is now a 30 mile radius circle centered on Reagan National airport.   What that means to yours truly is that Martin State, Bay Bridge, Kentmoor and Essex Skypark are no longer in the ADIZ!

To celebrate, the Essex Skypark Pilots Association decided to have an impromptu fly-in on Saturday.  And what great flying weather:  sunny, light winds, great visibility and temperature in the low 80s.

We had a great turnout.  All told, almost 40 airplanes flew in throughout the day.  It's been a long time since the Skypark has  seen this much flight activity.

The Essex Skypark Pilots Association provided free burgers, dogs, chips and sodas.

Our Citabria always looks good in the sunlight with the bright yellow paint job.

An RV-8 from Carroll County.

Max's Champ next to a big Seawind amphibian.

Three RVs in a row next to Brian's Cherokee.

Bruce R. arrives in his RV-8.

I had invited Citabria and RV drivers in their respective Yahoo Groups.  Four RVs showed up and three Trunk Monkeys in two Citabrias and a Cessna 170.

When's the last time you saw this many airplanes at Essex?  Plus there were some to the right and behind me.

Fred flew this Seawind in from the Eastern Shore.  He built it himself in less than four years -- 3000 hours total.  He has a lot of fun with it.

Al flew his Citabria over from Bay Bridge.  He said he felt very nervous flying over the bay squawking 1200 and half-expected to see F-16s join on him.

This is the new LSA that now resides at Essex Skypark.  It's an SC Aerostar "Festival".

Bob from my EAA Chapter flew in in his GT500 which he gives Light Sport instruction in.

I had to do some flying on this historic day so I just flew around the local area at 1000 feet.  It felt strange to be squawking 1200 and not talking with anybody.

Lots of boats were out enjoying the beautiful day.

Heading back towards Essex.
