October 10, 2009 - EAA Chapter Young Eagle Flights

My EAA Chapter 571 was giving Young Eagle rides this Saturday morning at Lee Airport near Annapolis.  We had three planes, all RVs:  pilot/builders Bruce R, George and myself.  The weather wasn't that hot -- overcast and a little gusty.

Bruce R. buckling in a Young Eagle who had just come from a soccer game and was still wearing his uniform.

George's 8.  We ended up giving 14 rides.  The four kids I took had never rode in a plane before, not even a jet airliner.  Three of them loved it.  The fourth -- a little girl -- talked a good show on the ground but she was clearly concerned in the air.   I also took two chapter members, one who is building an RV-7.  He said afterwards he was motivated for another 2000 rivets.  The second member is building a Turbo Cub which I gather is a superhot homebuilt SuperCub.

Afterwards, we had a Chapter picnic with burgers and dogs.  A nice get-together by people who just like airplanes.

Since Lee Airport and Annapolis are within the SFRA -- the restricted airspace formerly known as ADIZ -- I don't get down there too much anymore.   Too much hassle with making phone calls, and talking to air traffic control.  But since I ws in it, I took the opportunity to get some good pictures of Annapolis and the Naval Academy on the way home.  Here's a shot of Spa Creek with Annapolis on the far, north, side.  This weekend Annapolis is hosting the annual Sailboat Show which is a big deal and explains all the boats you see.

Looking back at the Spa Creek entrance which has a marina on each side.

You can see how close downtown Annapolis -- Maryland state capital -- and the Naval Academy are.

A good look at "Ego Alley" in the center of the picture during the Annapolis Sailboat Show.   Normally people drive their expensive boats into Ego Alley to show them off.  From this picture I was surprised to see that they have sealed it off and it is filled with boats.  The parking lot next to it is covered with a big square shaped tent

This was a good day to photograph the Naval Adademy for some reason.  The colors just seem to stand out -- the adobe and aqua-colored roofs surrounded by dark green trees and light green grass.

The big, white rectangular building in the lower right is the Naval Adademy's newest building.  Havn't been in it yet.  I believe they use it for sports related activities.

We went to the newly renovated Naval Adademy museum a few months ago.  They did a fantastic job on it -- highly recommended if you are looking for something to do.

Across the Severn River from the academy is the Naval Station where they keep all the Yard Patrol (YP) craft used to train the Midshipmen in seamanship.  The arrow points to them tied up side by side.
