January 5, 2008 - Rudder & Elevator Stops

I wanted to rivet the rudder stops to the fuse, but to do that I needed to remove the rudder, elevators and horizontal stab.

The rudder stop prior to riveting.

I was able to hand-squeeze the aft two rivets.  The foremost two rivets are pop-riveted.

Both rudder stops riveted.  Later, when I put the rudder and elevators back on, the rudder swing was just right, the rudder ending up an inch away from the elevators.

I decided now was a good time to rivet and bolt the elevator stop to the airframe.  So I did that.  I torqued the two AN-3 bolts.

Next I turned my attention to attaching the rudder cables to the rudder pedals.  You're supposed to fashion two steel "clips" for each side.  The drawings don't give you a length dimension -- you have to figure that our yourself.  I decided to make my clips out of aluminum -- easy to work with -- and once I got the right lengths, then make the real steel clips.

Here are my temporary aluminum clips.

I went back and forth a number of times before I had the right clip lengths that allowed the rudder to have its full range of movement.

My temporary aluminum clips with the steel stock above them.  Notice how the steel has some surface rust; this I would have to sand off.

I temporary screwed in one of my cabin air vents in the panel lower left hand corner.
