December 19, 2005 - Fwd Fuse Stiffener

The next component to work on was the forward fuse stiffener.  I trimmed and filed the ends a little, then drew a line down the center, then taped it to the skin so that the line showed through the skin holes.  Then I drilled and clecoed.  Standard.
It seems like every step in building the RV has it's own little peculiarity.  For the forward fuselage stiffeners, the peculiarity is the angle clips -- one for each side.  No big deal, really, but for some reason I had a hard time with them.  I ended up making five of the buggers!  First of all, you have to make a left and a right version.  I made two lefties.  Then I didn't notice on the drawings that the width of the horizontal surface at the forward end is not the same as the aft end.  Finally, when fashioning the angle clips, I just went ahead and drilled the holes in them according to the drawings.  My advice, learned the hard way, is not to drill them until later.

Here I am fashioning the angle clips.  I got pretty good at it.

Angle clips four and five.  Looking good.
The secret to the angle clips is match-drilling them to the stiffener and firewall angle.  They ended up turning out fine.  I just spent way too much time on them.
