February 9, 2008 - Ramp Baffles, Rage Gold Filler

I finally got around to riveting the rectangular thick piece to the canopy frame bar thing.  I only riveted the forward-most row.  The aft-most row gets riveted to the aft top skin and bulkhead.

Another long-lived item on the to-do list.  I riveted the two nut plates on the firewall recess.  The center cabin cover screws into these nutplates.  I thought these were going to be tough to rivet, but then I realized I could easily back-rivet them.  Which I did.

I trial-fit the recess into the firewall.  Later I drilled out three holes on the recess flange to #12 for a batter mount bolt, and two screws.

I made two foam pieces to go underneath the fuel line that runs along the fuse floor from the fuel selector valve to the aux fuel pump.  After two unsuccessful tries, I found the Dremel rotary cutter bit worked pretty well at making a half-circle channel through the foam.

The first foamie is in place.  I don't know, I may replace this one with something that wraps all the way around the tube.

Bill B. came over again.  He worked on the #1 and #2 cylinder ramps.  It was a nice task for him:  he got to cleco it together based on the drawing/instructions, then match-drill it,  remove the blue plastic, deburr and edge-smooth.

Hard at work match-drilling.

Later on, I set him up with some scrap stock, and he did some dimpling and riveting, both with the Main Squeeze and the Gun.

No, I didn't barf on my workbench.

I bought a gallon of Evercoat Rage Gold a couple of years ago and I'm finally getting around to trying it out.  The main portion is a yellow-orange color.  Mixing it with a little dark blue hardener gives you this beautiful shade of green.

I started off filling the seems in my vertical stab tip.

Rage Gold is a highly-regarded lightweight filler.  I was expecting it to be something I could brush on.  But its much thicker, and you have to apply it with a putty knife.  At least I did.

It dries quickly.  You only have five minutes or so to apply it.  On the other hand, you can sand it after 20 minutes.  It feathers nicely.

I built quite a few plastic model airplanes in my younger days and  Rage Gold is basically the same thing as the "Green Stuff" I used to use on the plastic models.

I put it on the rudder bottom tip ...

and the rudder top tip.

Bill B. did all the prep-work on these Ramp Baffle pieces.
