June 6, 2004 - Elevator Trim Tab

Here is the elevator trim tab skin with the spar clecoed to the top. Really not much to the trim tab.

First step was to bend the skin to the proper angle. I used the wood 2by8 brake followed by the 1/8 dowell and hand seamer.

Next step was to bend the tabs on each end. The trim tab is clamped upside down with wooden wedges, double edged tape and the C-cleamps. First, bend the bottom tab down, then the top tab up. I followed the instructions exactly, and used wood to do the initial bending. With this, I got the metal close. Then I used the rivet gun with a flush head at low pressure (approx 25psi). This worked really well in getting the tab to a good 90 degree bend. There's no way you can get it there by manually pushing it with wood.

This picture shows the tabs before bending.

This picture shows the bottom tab bent down.
This picture shows the top tab bent up over the bottom tab.
The trim tab all clecoed together. You can see the end tabs bent nicely, and the control horn tabs clecoed on.
A shot from the front. You can see the hinge clamped to the bottom of the top skin.
