December 9, 2007 - SL-60 Com/GPS Power-Up |
||||||
I bought the used SL-60 with the understanding that it worked. But I had never actually seen it work. So I figured I should hook it up to the power system before I spent more time on it. Thankfully, it fired right up.
The Com portion works just like the
Citabria's KX-125. I was able to figure out the GPS pretty
quickly without having to look at the manual. Everything is
graphical and moving-map these days, but I navigated in the Navy with
digital read-out's like this and have no problem with
it. Basically, you just tell it the waypoint, and it tells you
whether you are left or right of track and which way you are
trending. This GPS will be a backup to the 496. I'd much
rather have this than a VOR.

Here's a good look at my DSub connectors.
Now that I knew the SL-60 worked, I
finished wiring up the Com D-Sub connector. I ran the two shielded
wiring bundles from the Intercom Aux Jacks to the Connector per the
Intercom schematic. The shielding requires breaking out the
soldering
iron.

There, all done. | ||||||
I'm going to secure my wire bundles using tie-wrap anchors. They come with adhesive on the back, but it's obviously not going to hold for any length of time. I took one and removed the adhesive from the back, then glued it to a scrap piece of alcad-covered aluminum using the RTV sealant I had used with the trim governor. I let it dry for 24 hours and tried to pry it off. It ain't coming off! |
