December 28, 2007 - Control  Cable Brackets

Time to work on the control cables:  throttle, prop, mixture and carburator heat.  The first thing to work on are the two brackets.  One hangs underneath the panel and one hangs underneath the center subpanel.  Both brackets were already prepped and painted the same as the Panel.

First I drilled the holes in the Panel bracket.  I had to be careful as the control cables were not all the same.  The prop and mixture cables needed 3/4" holes, the throttle cable needed a 3/8" hole and the carb heat (same type cable as cabin heat) needed 3/16.  As far as layout dimensions, I'm going strictly by the drawings.  I'm almost at the end of four years on this project, and I'm not doing anything fancy that will mean more time.

And there's the prop control cable.  Van's supplies nice cables, I must say.

I learned from the Vans Air Force forums that vernier throttles are not good for formation flight.  The split second it takes to push in the buttom to move the throttle is a split second too long.  Because I had seen push-buttons on the prop control (blue) and mixture (red) cables, I thought I was going to have to buy a new throttle cable.  But for the first time I looked at the throttle (black) cable closely and was happy to see it had no push button!

Here, I have the throttle, prop and carb heat cables trial-mounted.

On to the subpanel bracket.  Per the drawings, I drilled the nutplates holes.  The control cables will run through Adel clamps which in turn will be screwed into the nutplates.  The bracket itself gets riveted to the center subpanel.
