January 26, 2007 - Canopy, Wing Bottom Skin

I got the canopy to the point where I needed to fit the canopy through the slot in the canopy skin "ears".  From Dan Checkoway's website I knew the slot needed widening considerably, so I started that.
I would end up with slots three times as large as this.
I knew from the Vans Air Force forums that the canopy was frustrating and so it has been.  It's not particularly difficult, it's just that the progress is glacial.  And one gets tired of taking the canopy off, cutting/trimming, putting the canopy on,  taking it off, more trimming, and so on.  I'm getting sick of lifting that thing on and off!

So it's working out pretty well to take a break from the canopy and do some riveting on the bottom skin.  Tonight we finished the inboard skin and started on the outboard skins.  We started on the rear spar rivets.

For me, surprisingly, the hardest rivets have been those on the main spar flange.  The nutplates make it difficult to get the bucking bar squarely on the shop head.
