Great Guana Cay, Great Abaco, Bahamas

Now the vacation really begins.  Since Great Guana Cay is an island, we obviously needed water transportation.  We caught a cab from the airport to the ferry landing but the next ferry wasn't for a few hours.  As luck would have it, there was a nice bar named Curly Tails overlooking the ferry landing.  So we hung out there and were introduced to "Kalik", the Bahamian beer.   It was a hardship waiting for the ferry but somehow we managed.

The ferry boat has arrived!

Going to Great Guana Cay!

It was about half an hour ride to Great Guana Cay.

Pumped up!

Off-loading at Great Guana Cay.

The tide was out.

This is where we stayed at for two nights:  Grabbers Bed, Bar & Grill.   Nice place.  It has its own beach, facing west, which makes for great sunsets.  Pool.  Outside bar and restaurant.  Plus lots of palm trees.   Like it.

Did I mention there were lots of palm trees?

The main building where the outside bar and grill is.  The beach and pool is on the other side.

A short walk south was the famous Nippers Bar which faces the ocean.

Look how clear the water is at Grabbers beach.

That's an old World War II landing craft washed up on the beach.

Enjoying the sunset on our first night in the Bahamas.

Yes, I really took this photo.  It's real.  They weren't kidding about the sunsets at Grabbers.  Check out the couple at lower right enjoying the moment.

My little Sony camera takes great pictures.

The next morning Jack and I walked the beach for a couple of miles.  The sand was unbelievably thick and luxurious.

Later on, back at Grabbers beach, Jack checks out the water.

Bill taking it a little easy this morning.

It turns out there isn't a whole lot to Great Guana Cay.  There is Grabbers and Nippers and other than a few little tourist stores, that's about it.  There are vacation houses you can rent but unless you had a boat, I think you'd get bored pretty quick.   Grabbers didn't serve breakfast so we walked around and couldn't find a place to eat breakfast!   There was one small shack that did serve breakfast but the lady that ran it was off the island for a week.

The big event on Sundays at Great Guana Cay, and in the central Abaco area, is the Pig Roast at Nippers.  Boaters sail or motor up just to attend the Pig Roast which goes on all afternoon.

Happy about the Pig Roast.

The party at Nippers is in full swing.

We didn't actually see the pig being roasted.  Turns out it was a buffett that included roast pig plus a lot of other good stuff.  The food was excellent.
