I did a lot of riveting this day, riveting the aileron gap fairing and
flap brace to the wing rear spar.
This is the aileron gap fairing. It rivets to the rear spar and the top skin. The top skin rivets are a piece of cake. AN426 3-3s. Hand squeezer. The rear spar rivets require are AN470 4-4/5s but again you can use the hand squeezer on most of them. Although it seemed like more effort than usual was required to squeeze them for some reason. My left arm got tired and I had to take a break halfway through. |

Some of my better work.

More aileron gap fairing. | ||||||
The aileron gap fairing.
These rivets have to be shot with the gun. But you can use the
straight piece. Here is my current technique: a. Stick blue tape around the rivet end to protect the metal from scratches. b. Position the rivet head. c. Position the bucking bar. Put it parallel to the spar web by touching the bucking bar end to the web, then backing it off a little. d. The first rivet gun burst is very short, to set it. e. Two or more gun bursts as necessary. f. Check shop head with rivet gauge. |
