Building the Welding Table

With the wing ribs done and the wing spars mostly done, the next step is to build the fuselage.  You may be asking why not finish the wings?  Because the wing spars must be fitted to the fuselage.  It would be impossible to do that if the ribs were mounted to the spars or the wings completed.

The first step in building the fuselage is to build a welding table.  The table must be long enough so that the entire fuselage side will fit on it.

After reading a number of articles on building a table, I decided to go with the "box" table.  It's made out of 3/4" thick particle board and essentially is a giant door.  Particle board is supposed to not burn as easily.  We'll see about that.  I figured one long gigantic table would be too heavy and unwieldy to move about so I built two seven foot long sections.

First I glued and clamped together the ladder structure. Then I glued the bottom sheet.

Then the top.

I have the three wing spars on the spar table so they will not be damaged if my basement floods for some reason.

Clamping down the top sheet on one of the two sections.  The sections will but end to end.

I went out and bought four plastic sawhorses upon which the table sections rest.

I used my laser device to mark a centerline down the table.  It will be the baseline from which to transfer the fuse side dimensions from the plans to the table.
