March 2, 2013 - Glueing the Spar Flanges
With the spar flanges all scarfed and tapered, I was ready to glue them together on the newly completed spar table. I did a pair at a time. I started with the upper wing, top spar flanges: forward and aft.
I applied T-88 epoxy glue to each side
of the spar flange scarf being glued together. I made sure the
area was wrapped in wax paper so it wouldn't get glued to the spar
table. I used 2" x 3" pine as spacers between the oak clamp down
strips and the spar flange. I used clamps to hold the spar
flanges tightly to the steel angle walls.
A close-up. You can see how the spar flanges are join together with the 9" scarf joint.
My first pair of upper wing spar
flanges are complete! They are 21 and a half feet long.
From another angle. Per the plans, I let the glue dry for 24 hours. So I could do one pair a day.
