Day 7 Part 3 - To Canyonlands Airport, Moab, UT

I left the Green River and turned northeast up the Colorado River.  The "Island in the Sky" is on the left.

It's like a mini-Grand Canyon.

A big horseshoe bend in the river.

A good look at the Island in the Sky.

Rocks growing out of the ground like mushrooms.

Sign of life!

I was amazed when these bright blue ponds appeared ahead.  After seeing nothing but red, orange, and brown, the blue really stood out.

They are salt evaporation ponds.

A big truck scooping up the salt.

Approaching the town of Moab.

Over the town of Moab where I would stay tonight.  Moab sits in between two National Parks:  Arches to the north and Canyonlands to the south.  Moab's airport is called Canyonlands Airport which is 18 miles to the northwest.

I quickly checked out Arches National Park from the air.

An arch is clearly visible to the right.  I would be checking it out on foot about three hours later.

How many arches can you see?

Looks like good flying country in the distance.  But it will have to be on another trip.

Back to Arches.  It's not a big park and basically just has one road running through its length.

It was just a few minutes west from Arches and I was overhead Canyonlands Airport.

Canyonlands has a passenger terminal for the airline service.

Looks like I'm parked in the front row!

It was only mid-day when I arrived.  As I mentioned, the airport is 18 miles from the town of Moab, so you need a car.  Arches Repair Service keeps rental cars at the airport.  I hopped into one, drove into Moab, and filled out the paperwork at their office.  Then I checked into an inexpensive motel and headed for Arches National Park.
