July 29, 2007 - ELT Bracket, Fuel Pump, Spar Gussets |

I started the day with the ELT mounting bracket. This time I started with the nutplates. They are pre-drilled -- inboard this time. It occured to me that this was a perfect situation for back-riveting so that's what I did. It's been a long time since I back-riveted, which is probably the easiest, best quality type of riveting there is.
I drilled the bracket to the J-stringers.

Then pop-riveted it. As always, the second time went much faster than the first. Notice where I trimmed the bracket a little so that the rudder cable wouldn't rub against it. I also put a piece of UMV tape on the bracket.
Next step was to bolt the aux fuel pump to the firewall. I needed
to do this so I could fashion the fuel line that runs from the fuel
selector valve along the floor to the fuel pump. I tried making
the fuel line but the bend to the fuel pump was too short to be able
flare with the flaring tool. I tried flaring the end, and then
bending the tube, but that didn't work. After three tries I gave
up and ordered a 90 degree steel fitting from Spruce ($5) that will go
into the bottom end of the fuel pump.

The instructions never really said when to drill these center spar gussets. Or if they did I never saw it. Anyways, I figured I might as well do it now. I bolted the gusset to the center spar using hardware store bolts, then match-drilled the gusset side to #12 (for AN-3 bolts) using the fuse skin as a template. There's quite a lot of aluminum to drill through there.
All done. This is what it looks from the outside. I also pop-riveted that hole to the lower right with an LP4-3 per the drawings.
