AirVenture 2007 - Vintage

I must say there seemed to be an abundance of big, beautiful vintage biplanes at Oshkosh this year.

This 1928 Stearman Model C3-B was parked out in front of the EAA Workshops.  It won the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2007 Silver Age Outstanding Closed Cockpit Biplane award.  No wonder.

The EAA "Lindy" is the most prestigious award there is for aircraft restoration and building.

This 1927 Swallow was the Oshkosh 2006 Bronze Lindy award for Golden Age (1918-1927).  It's powered by the Wright Curtis OX-5.
1946 Beech G17S -- better known as the famous Staggerwing.  This particular plane won a 2006 Antique Bronze Lindy for the World War II era category.  There were four or five Staggerwings, but I liked the green with purple trim paint scheme on this one.
Check out that luxurious interior.  This is the way to travel! The Staggerwing was the business jet of its day.
This is a Speedmill Special replica built in 2004.
I liked the paint scheme on this Stearman.
Of course I have to include a shot of a Waco.  I'd love to have a Waco.  I'm still upset I didn't win that Waco AOPA was giving away a few years ago.

This particular Waco Classic YMF isn't that old.  It was built in 1987 by Waco Classic Aircraft Corporation

Check out the unusual windscreen on this plane.
A Champ in pre-World War II Navy markings.
I don't usually take pictures of Bonanza's but I did like the paint scheme on this one.  Classic.
Now here's a plane I always take a picture of:  the big, round engine Cessna 195.  There was an entire row of them.
This is a homebuilt Hatz biplane
I thought this was the prettiest plane at Oshkosh.  It's a 1938 Reliant SR-10 made by the Stinson Aircraft Company.

Jimmy Doolittle flew it as a VP for Shell Oil Company in 1938 and 1939.

Jimmy Doolittle  -- now there was a renaissance man.  Won the Schneider, Bendix and Thompson air race trophies, first to perform an outside loop, first to takeoff, fly and land using instruments alone, led the B-25 raid on Tokyo from an aircraft carrier, commanded the 12th Air Force in North Africa and the 8th Air Force in England, VP of Shell Oil Company.  Not too many men can point to a list of accomplishments like that.
