October 26, 2008 - Cowl

I riveted the cowl filler door hinge to the upper cowl.  Happily, I was able to do it with the Main Squeeze.

An RV-8 builder in my EAA Chapter recommended putting down a light piece of fiberglass over the rivet line so I did that.  Supposedly it will help prevent cracks in the paint.  Later on though, I would regret it.  Just took too much time filling and sanding to "feather" it into the cowl.

My foam reinforcements on the oil cooler door looked pretty bad so I laid some more glass down, this time using peel-ply to smooth things out.

Some final filling and sanding on the inlet doors.

I started using this 1/4" thick rubber squeegee to apply the Rage Gold filler.  Works great -- saves from having to do a lot of sanding.  It's made by 3M; I got it at the local auto paint store.

The cowl halves.  Not sure why I took this picture.

From another angle.  Maybe I took these pictures because I thought I was almost done.  If I had only known what was to come!
