January 11, 2008 - HS and Elevator Tips |
||||||
Tongiht I worked on the horizontal stab and elevator fiberglass tips. First, I dimpled a couple of holes on the trailing edge that I hadn't done almost four years ago because I had no way to do it at the time. But now, I had the 1/8" pop-rivet dimpling tool I could use.
Next, I went to cut out a piece of
foam to fill the horizontal stab tip opening. I had bought this big
piece of foam from Aircraft Spruce a long time ago. This is the
first time I've worked with foam. I've no idea if this is the right
kind of foam but it seems like it should work. I used an X-acto
knife to cut the
foam.

Per the drawings, I filed the edges of the lead counterweights so that they conformed to the aluminum piece.
After a little
trimming with the Dremel sanding drum,
the foam fit in the HS tip nice and tight. I epoxied the
foam into the tip. Later, I'll cover it with fiberglass.

I made one final check to make sure the elevator swung without interferance. Then I epoxied the elevator tip to the lead counterweight, and pop-riveted the tip to the elevator.
The tip riveted to the elevator.
I have to glass the HS tip before I pop-rivet it tot he HS.
