December 24, 2005 - F-902 Bulkhead |
||||||
I clecoed in the F-902 bulkhead. Not much of a bulkhead, really. More like a vertical stiffener.
The "bulkhead" required just a little bit of fluting.
|
||||||
Using the unibit, I drilled a 5/8" hole in each F-902 bulkhead for the rudder cables.
Then I clecoed in the F-7101 Gear Attach Web which is just a relatively
thick aluminum reinforcing plate. The RV-7A's main gear attach in
this area so I think this is the reason for the thick plate. It's
probably overkill but the drawings don't say anything about a lightening
hole so I'll just leave it as is.

||||||
I drilled it using the skin as a template. I had to use the "hold it in place with rivets" method, since that's about all you can do to keep everything aligned.

Next I drilled the Gear Attach Web flange to the F-902 bulkhead. The only way to do this was with the angle drill. I had bought the angle drill early in the project. It was expensive and since I really haven't used it much, I have long felt that I wasted my money on it. In fact, I haven't really had an occasion to use it where I couldn't have used the 12" bit just as easily. But now, for the first time, the angle drill was the only tool that could do the job properly. So I feel better about spending the money on it. .
