September 24, 2005 - Grimes, PA Fly-In

My plan today was to fly to the Golden Age Air Museum Fly-in at Grimes Airfield in Pennsylvania, then angle southwest to Jan's for some soaring.  The weather forecast was iffy but it looked fine at Essex so I took off and headed north.  The weather was actually pretty good -- some sun and great visibility.  Here, I'm heading north and looking at the Susquehanna River to the East.
The Susquehanna River to the West.
I didn't have the GPS on this flight so I was using the VOR for navigation.  I called up Lancaster tower and got a transition through their airspace.  You can see the VOR transmitter station on the right.
Grimes Airfield.  I was disappointed in the turnout -- there were only about 20 planes.
It's a beautiful field, with nice new hangars, filled with neat, antique, airworthy airplanes.
Aeronca C-3.  I don't know if I'd fly in this.  Looks kind of like a bathtub with wings.

Pietenpol Air Camper.  This reminds me a lot of the Baby Ace.

Someone did a beautiful job on this Rans S-7.  The workmanship was impeccable.
I bet this is a very fun plane to fly.
Nice panel.
This is a World War I German observation plane.
Not sure what these were but they sure looked beautiful flying over in formation.
They looked just as good on the ground.
You could buy a ride in this plane.  Two passengers could sit side by side up front; the pilot in back.  Notice Shorty's Grill in the background on the left.  They made a good breakfast sandwich.
I left around noon because I wanted to get to Jan's for some soaring.  However, as soon as I crossed the Susquehanna heading south, the weather started deteriorating.  First it became overcast, then it started lightly raining.  I ended up stopping at Frederick for lunch, then headed back to Essex.
