July 11-12, 2005 - Tangier Island

After 24 years of marriage, Lynnette has agreed to fly with me.  The lure:  a trip to Tangier Island and overnight in a Bed and Breakfast.
Crisfield Airport (W41), the last stop before going feet wet to Tangier Island.  I've been here a couple of times before.  A nice airport with both paved and turf runways.
The seaport town of Crisfield, crabcake capitol of the world.  Most people travel to/from Tangier Island via boat from this port.
It's about 14 miles over water to Tangier Island.  Visibility was poor today, about 7 miles.  Lynnette liked the smooth air over the water.
Tangier Island.  Most of the habitable area is along three ridges, which go from left to right.  The center ridge is "Main Street."  The runway was surprisingly long and wide, although it has weeds growing through cracks.  I think a significant number of their tourism business arrives via air.

Tangier Island is a working island of 600 people.  But they do have three Bed & Breakfasts', some restaurants, gift stores and an ice cream parlor.  It's a nice place to spend a day or a weekend.  It's small enough that you can cover the entire island via foot, or you can rent bikes or golf carts.

A good view of two of the three ridges.
Safe on deck.
The Terminal.  There was a $5 landing fee and $5 overnight fee.  An airport attendant called our Bed and Breakfast who picked us up in a golf cart.  There are a few cars on the island but most of the 600 inhabitants travel around via golf carts.
The waterfront area.  Fishing and tourism are the two main components of their economy.  The fishing is slowly dying out, however.
The white building on the left is the school, grades K through 12.
The Hilda Crockett Bed & Breakfast where we stayed.
The timer function on my new digital camera works great!
Loading up the trusty Citabria for the flight home.  Unfortunately visibility today will be even worse than yesterday, about five miles.
A final view of the island from the North.
We flew up the Chesapeake Bay on the way home to take advantage of the smooth air.  Passing Kent Island on our right, we flew near Kentmorr Airport, a small airport community strip.
The Bay Bridge.
All in all, a very nice trip.  I'd recommend a visit to Tangier Island if you havn't been.  It's different and interesting.
