Lobster Run - 2nd Leg |

After refueling at Great Barrington, I continued heading northeast. As you can see, it was heavily overcast at this point. Because of the terrain, I had to fly high -- high for the Citabria is 5,000! -- and it was cold. The Citabria has a heater but around 30 degrees I think it just gets overwhelmed. That big hill up ahead has snow on it. I was about 200 miles from Wiscasset, tired, and the next 100 miles wasn't much fun.
Magically, the sun came out for the last 100 miles, the foliage started looking good, and things warmed up. I descended for some low-level.
What a difference the sun makes. Things got really pretty.
These pictures don't do the view justice.

The entire northeast is continuous woods. Up in Maine and New Hampshire, there are lots of these little lakes and little towns.
Wood, rolling hills country. Fun to fly low over.
I'll just let the images speak for themselves on some of these.
Summer vacation homes ring the lakes.

Approaching Brunswick, Maine. Lynnette and I lived here for three years 1983-1986. The blue arrow is pointing to Brunswick Naval Air Station where I served in Patrol Squadron (VP) 26. Amazingly, a couple of VP-26 P-3 Orions were doing pattern work as I approached. I could tell because their call sign beings with Lima Kilo (LK). The red arrow points to the town of Brunswick. The yellow arrow points to the town of Topsham, where we lived, on the other side of the Androscoggin river.
Looking east at Topsham, Brunswick, and the base. Looking further east, you can see the Atlantic Ocean.
A little further north is the town of Bath, home of Bath Iron Works, builder of Navy ships. They're currently building Arleigh Burke destroyers.
Just a little further north and I am overhead Wiscasset Airport. Six and a half hours in the air today and I've had enough flying for one day.
The faithful and reliable Citabria
bedded down for the night. I rented a car through "Wicked Good Aviation Services" and stayed at a motel down in Brunswick. |
