February 10, 2007 - 4th Annual Valentines Day
Citabria Fly-In Luncheon

It's February and that can mean only one thing:  the annual Valentines Day Citabria Fly-In at Lancaster Airport!  Last year I think we had to postpone three weeks in a row for weather.  But today's weather wasn't too bad so we got it done on the first try.

The temperature was 16 degrees driving out to the Skypark.  Bruce and I fired up the Red Dragon preheater and 20 minutes later the Citabria's O-320 was nice and warm.  Turning crosswind below, we were surprised at how iced up the Back River was.

Looking across the Back River.  In the distance you can see the Key Bridge on the left and Baltimore on the right.
The great town of Essex, Maryland.  It you are ever in the area, stop by Pizza John's; it's the best.
Heading north, we flew over the Susquehanna River into Pennsylvania.
Looking West.  Bruce was flying and I was freezing in the back.  We were at 2,500 feet and it got pretty darn cold up there.
Everybody arrived fairly close to 10:30 and the Tower was surprised when all these Citabria's suddenly showed up and started calling him.

Six Citabrias/Super Decathelon showed up and ten people I think.  Not a bad turnout considering the cold.  We sat at two tables.  One table had breakfast and the other lunch.  We had the usual good time swapping flying stories and other lies.

This is John's High Country Explorer, which is basically a new model Citabria featuring 180 horses up front and bush flying wheels.

Our Citabria sandwiched between Tom's and Pete's.
Al's Citabria and Jay's Super Decathelon.
It had warmed up a little but the wind was blowing more so it was a wash.   Before departing Lancaster, half of us taxiied over to the Pilot Shop and checked it out.

It was good seeing the Trunk Monkeys and we're all looking forward to our next event:  a Hudson River run by NYC in late April.
