May 7, 2006 - Soaring at Jans'

The weather looked very promising for soaring this Sunday.  A bunch of friends were there when we arrived so we had a good time talking flying with them.  The sky was a little unusual; instead of cumulous clouds, there was a line running east-west with overcast north of the line and sun south of the line.  Surprisingly, there was consistent lift just south of the line.  I was able to cycle between 2000-4000 feet almost two hours.  The second hour of the flight the overcast filled the entire sky, but there was still lift to be found.  Bill Burner was already up in the Birdfalke when I released from tow in the Ka-8.  We played around together, then Bruce came up in the Corben Baby Ace.  I tried to get some aerial shots but it's tough flying a single seat glider and shooting a camera at the same time.
Bruce went back down in the Baby Ace, then came back up in his AS-27 glider.  We flew together for awhile, then I broke away and did some stalls, steep turns and wingovers.  By this time, I was just about frozen so it was time to land.  Later on I did a 15 minute flight in the Baby Ace, never getting higher than 500 feet agl.  Flying the Baby Ace is to know what the early days of aviation were like.  It's incredible -- the funnest flying there is -- at least for me.
