March 26, 2006 - Campbell Field Airport Soup on Sunday

The flying forecast looked promising so Bruce and I hoped into the Citabria and headed south down the Eastern Shore to the   Campbell Field Airport (9VG) Soup on Sunday fly-in.  Campbell Field is a public grass field airport whose owner hosts a fly-in most every Sunday that features hot dogs and chili.  I've been trying to get down there for some time but havn't been able to make it until now due to the poor flying weather this year.

In fact, when we took off, the weather didn't look that hot.  The sky was overcast and there was actually a little light rain at times.  As we crossed the Bay, the visibility couldn't have been more than five miles.  But as we went south, it cleared up, and around Cambridge, the sun was out and the sky was blue.

Once you get below Cambridge, there isn't much in the way of civilization.  There is a lot of swamp and intricate land formations like below on the bay side.

Overhead Campbell Field airport.  How often do you see intersecting runways at a grass field?
The Citabria next to the owner's Grumman Tiger.
We all hung out at the entrance to the hangar.  Why?  That's where the hot dogs and chili were.  Pretty good, too.   Later on, we saw in lawnchairs and enjoyed sitting outside in the sun for the first time this year.
Two pilots flew in from Norfolk in this beautiful Piper Colt.
The owner just got this Phantom ultralight.  The surrounding countryside, bay and ocean barrier islands are perfect for low and slow fun flying.
While Bruce was chowing down on dogs and chili, I hopped in the Citabria and flew over to the barrier islands.  They are completely bare of anything man-made and are not designated wildlife refuge or anything like that.  In otherwords, You can have some fun flying down the beach!
That's the Atlantic Ocean dead ahead.
Cruising low down the beach.
Rolling in on some unsuspecting seagulls.
As we flew back in the late afternoon, the weather was great.  The Eastern shore is really scenic when the sun is out late in the day.  This is the Wicomico River meandering east towards Salisbury.
It's hard to make out in this picture but there is a herd of deer in the middle of that big notch into the trees.
A typical Eastern Shore waterfront mansion.  Just kidding.  Usually they ARE mansions.  You don't often see a trailer home on the shore like this.
Another herd of deer in the middle of the image.
Chalk up another great flying day.
