July 30, 2004 - AirVenture 04 Day One

The Mecca of Aviation.

The weather this day wasn't that great. In fact, we had to break out the ponchos for a couple of hours. The airshow was abbreviated a little bit. That said, we had a great day just looking at all the planes and checking out all the vendor booths.

Stemmes motorglider. Top of the line. World-class glider performance and it has two-seats and an engine! Only problem is it costs in the neighborhood of $200,000.
A Sonex on floats. Interesting.
This Sopwith Pup replica has a 350 horsepower radial engine on it! The real thing back in 1918 had 80 horsepower. Think those World War I pilots would have liked to have the 350 horses?
I like these big amphibians.
Cool 3/4 scale Bearcat.
One of Bruce's favorites: an F4F Wildcat.
It's hard to see but in this picture of a B-25, there must have been over 1000 rivets just in the part you see here.
There was a company that restores Stearman's. This example of their work was stunning; absolutely perfect. Seriously, I could not even find the fabric seams on the tail feathers. Having done two fabric jobs, I was in awe of their work.
Nice Cub on skiis with an unusual prop cover.
