February 5, 2007 - Aft Canopy |
||||||
I stopped at Harbor Freight during my lunch hour and picked up some small bar clamps, a sanding block and some sandpaper. I needed the clamps to hold the aft canopy to the roll bar in preparation for drilling.
I ordered these plastic drill bits some time ago. I felt pretty
confident that I wouldn't crack the canopy using a sharp, new plastic
drill bit. I tried the 1/8" bit on some scrap pexiglass and it
worked great.

I drilled all the holes using the 1/8" bit according to the instructions, working from the center top, down each side. The 1/16" pilot holes really worked well on the aft edge. (Hat tip to Dan Checkoway) On the forward edge, I drilled through the plastic until I encountered the roll bar underneath, then I stopped. Everything came out fine.
Before I removed the aft canopy, I marked the forward edge where it needs a little trimming -- along the left lower part. Tomorrow I'll trim it then use the sanding block to make the edge as straight as I can get it.
