Hawk's Nest, Cat Island, Bahamas

We arrived at Hawk's Nest in the mid-afternoon, which gave us some time to enjoy the pool and beach.  They had a very nice bar in the main building.  But no bartender.  Get this:  it was an honor bar.  You just marked on a clipboard what you took.  Furthermore, there was no key for the room.  Clearly, this was a different sort of place!

We were having Kalik's by the pool and got to talking with an interesting Charter Boat Captain.   Hawk's Nest is probably best known for the deep-sea fishing.  They have a nice marina and the fishing around here is supposedly fabulous.

We went down to the marina channel with the charter boat captain who said we needed to watch what the fishermen do for fun after a day of fishing.

They tie a fish carcass to a rope and throw it in the water.  Soon sharks show up and bite into the fish!  They were pretty good size sharks:  6-8 feet.  Most were Lemon sharks but there were a couple of Tiger Sharks like this one.  Tiger Sharks are maneaters, by the way.

The marina channel exits to the ocean.

This guy is hard core!

There were quite a few boats in the marina.

Jack and I having fun on bikes on the runway.

Officially, the Hawk's Nest runway is 3100 feet long.  But because of those two buildings on the left, it has a displaced threshold of 1900 feet.  That 1900 feet is prefectly good runway so really the runway is 5000 feet long.  And wide, as you can see.

The resort is just behind my airplane, on the other side of the palm trees.

Bahamian wildlife.

The beach area was very nice.

We had it to ourselves.

Just us and Mr. Kalik.

Jack likes to stand out in the ocean.

I just liked to sit on the beach and look out over the ocean.

This big Cessna Caraban turboprop belongs to the Hawk's Nest owner.  We talked to the pilot who flys the owner back and forth between New Mexico and here.

You order your dinner selection when you check in.  I asked for fish.  The dining room was in the main building complex with bar and pool outside.  The dinner was excellent.  The fish -- I think it was Mahi Mahi -- had been caught earlier in the day.  Most of the resort guests were at the dinner so it was social event of the day.  The owner walked from table to table and chatted with everyone.  Nice guy.
