June 2, 2007 - Axle and Fuel Lines |

I was a little nervous about drilling the cotter pin holes because builders have had trouble with it. I put the wheels on, then tightened the axle nuts down snug, making sure the wheels still rotated freely. Then I used my 12inch #30 bit to just get a hole started -- just to mark it really. I also tried to make sure the bit went into a groove; not directly on a thread.
The image doesn't really show it but the hole location was visible.
The axle nut spun right off. If I had had trouble, I wouldn't have
been able to unscrew the axel nut.
I realized that there was no way I could drill the axle by myself and
with the equipment I have. I decided to take the gear over to
Bruce's house with his nice drill press and tube jig. We drilled
the axles with me holding the gear, the axle sitting in the tube jig and
using the drill press. Worked great. The axle nuts screwed
back on easily.

I used my reamer to open up the gear bolt holes.

I was determined to finish the fuel lines today. I had to flair the one end with the tube in the brackets. I remembered to put the sleeve and nut on just in time!
Then I did the left side and I was done. This took me more than a couple of hours. I really don't like making aluminum lines. It's time-consuming and stressful. If you make a mistake, you have to start all over again. I still have to make the line from the fuel selector valve to the fuel pump on the firewall, but I can do that with the wings off.
