May 28, 2007 - Spinning Wheels |

Today was Memorial Day and I devoted the day to building the RV, having
got my flying fix yesterday. I went downstairs not really having a solution for the wobbly wheels. I checked the forums but no one had described a problem like I was having. I tried a few things with no luck. I was out of ideas, so I played my final card -- I read the instructions. I came across this line: "Fit the 5:00x5 Cleveland wheels and U-405 Axle Spacers (one on each side of the wheel) on the axle." Spacers? I looked in my parts box and found the below spacers. |
||||||
Of course, with the spacers, everything worked perfectly. The
wheels rotated perfectly with no wobble whatsoever. I had the
perfect spacing between the brake drum and wheel fairing mount -- shown
below. All right!

||||||
There, both wheels are on.
I switched around the fittings on one of the brake assemblys.
|
||||||
I trail-fit the brake assemblys and calipers. The brake line elbow goes on top, facing aft, and the bleed nipple goes on the bottom.
Next I started modifying the axle nuts for the Jacking Mount Kit I had bought from Avery Tools. First I drilled out the two nutplates.
Then I drilled a 1" diameter hole with the drill press.
Finally, I filed a groove in the end of the axle nut so that the steel
brackets shown at left would lay flush. This probably took me four
hours! Early on, I realized it would take a long time and I might
as well sit on the couch and watch TV While doing it. I ended up
watching part of Patton, Where Eagles Dare and Starsky and Hutch.
Only after I was done did I discover that Avery also sells
pre-configured axle nuts for $22. I wish I had known. I hate
spending that kind of time on something so tedius.
