Day 5 - Green River, Desolation Canyon, Uintah Valley

I'm following the Green River northwards through the Tavaputs Plateau.   John Wesley Powell named it Desolation Canyon.  Due to bad weather, I had not been able to fly this portion of the river two years ago, so I did not know what to expect.

Wow, I didn't really expect this.

This is not a national park, monument or wilderness area.

This stretch through the Tavaputs Plateau was known as "Desolation Canyon".

I think Desolation Canyon is a fitting name.

I must admit, I was a little relieved when the canyon walls started getting lower.

Nine Mile Creek branches off to the west towards Price.  This is where I may have turned off two years ago when I had to divert for weather.

Gradually the river emerged into the big Uintah valley.

Cottonwood groves at peak foliage lined the river.

Now I am really out in the big Uintah Valley.

Some horses were hanging out on the sandbar; I wonder if they were wild.

You can't beat this kind of flying.

I finally encountered civilization just south of Vernal.  It's a shame to see a junkyard on the side of such a pretty river.

The Uinta mountains and Dinosaur National Monument are visible in the distance.  Time now to leave the river and head west.
