Day 4 - Lake Powell, Utah

OK, back on the Colorado River.  I've flown it before and knew what to expect:  a tall, narrow canyon.

After awhile I was in the Orange Cliffs area which has some nice buttes.

Yes, there is a bridge down there.  There aren't all that many of them crossing the Colorado River.

A good look at the Orange Cliffs.

The river starts turning into Lake Powell.

It's definately Lake Powell now.

I came to the Bullfrog Basin area where there are a couple of marinas; once on each side of the Lake.

I headed over to Cal Black Memorial airport a short distance to the east.  There aren't many airports around here and even less that have fuel, so I figured I would stop, top off the fuel tanks, and stretch my legs.  I didn't know what to expect from this airport as it is very remote and was only one comment on it from Feb 2014 in AirNav.com.  I was surprised at how nice the runway looked from the air.  I had expected to see some half dirt runway, not a new, modern airport.

The fuel p;ump isn't self-service but the FBO attendant met me right away and fueled me up.  Turns out he was an ex-Navy P-3 guy like myself.  Small world.

The terminal had a nice little lounge to relax in.  They may have a courtesy car but I think the only place to go is the marina.   The airport is named after San Juan County commissioner Calvin Black who had built a short, dirt landing strip near the Halls Crossing Marina on Lake Powell.  They built this airport to replace it and named it after Cal.

I had taken this picture of what I thought might be an old runway as I approached the marina.  I bet this is Cal's old dirt strip.

I didn't "need" fuel but I topped off anyways.  I like to fly on the top half of my tanks out here in the west.  Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it, I always say.

Another look at Cal Black airport as I departed.  Glad I stopped.  Nice airport.

Heading back to Lake Powell.

Boater's paradise.

The second marina on the north side.

I was just crossing Lake Powell to fly north-northwest up Capital Reef National Park which I haven't flown before.
