November 4, 2007 - Run Wires to Wings

I wanted to run my power wires separate from the signal wires.  The problem was there was only so much real-estate in the two snap-bushings in the center of the main spar.  There was no way I was getting the ELT phone wire and the auto-pilot servo bundle through the center.  Then I noticed I had snap-bushing holes on each side of the main spar.  I guess I had put these in accordings to the drawings long ago.  Anyways, they perfect for running the ELT, auto-pilot and magnetometer wires.

That's the magnetometer wire running through the main spar and out to the left wing.  Along with the shielded strobe wire bundle.  I don't like running them together but have no choice.  They are both shielded -- things should be OK.  I decided to mount my magnetometer on the left wing tip, using a mounting bracket I bought from Safe Air 1.

It took me quite awhile to arrive at this stage, but here are the strobe and autopilot wires ready for when the right wing is mounted.

How to handle the wires that go to the wing is one of those "issues" in the RV community.  I clearly fall into the camp of no connectors.  I intend to mount my wings once, and hopefully once only.  Gliders are made to have their wings easily detachable, for moving around on trailors.  The RV is not a glider.  It's a real bear to get those close tolerance bolts in the wing spar and I only want to have to do it once.  So I'm leaving my wires intact, with no connectors.  I'll try to put a service loop in, so if the wings do have to come off, I'll just cut the wires, and put connectors on then.

 And here's the left side.

I bought this governor for the elevator trim on a multiple offender's recommended.  I know I'm going to mount it near the pilot's stick, but not sure how I'm going to mount it.  I posted a question on the Vans Air Force forums about it.

This is the trim indicator.   It wasn't until now that I realized I would have to run four wires the length of the fuselage for this thing.  I'm wondering if my Dynon FD-180 can show the trim -- maybe it was a mistake to put this in?
