March 5, 2005 - Right Landing Light |
||||||
The leading edge is complete but before I can rivet it on the main spar, I have to put in the Duckworth landing light. I'll have one in each wing. Here, I'm looking at the landing light in the left wing.
First step was to cut out the hole in the wing. First I drilled
these 1/4" holes, the beginning size for the Unitbit.
|
||||||
This shows the holes after widening with the Unitbit.
Now I have enough room to get the snips in there.

Action shot! | ||||||
Getting there. | ||||||
A wingtip, the right fuel tank and the right skins. In the background is one of my old radio-controlled airplanes: a Stearman. I started building it in 1981 and flew it for the first time in 1991. I have to laugh that I once considered building the Stearman a "big" project. I could have built ten of them in the time I've spent building the RV in the last year!
Once I got the hole within about 1/8" of the target line with the snips,
I started using the dremel tool to take it to the line.
|
||||||
At first I used a fat, sanding disk. Then I tried a new dremel bit that looks like a gear. It worked great. Just have to be careful though because it goes through aluminum like a hot knife through warm butter.
I have a healthy respect for the Dremel tool and always wear eye and ear
protection when using it.
