2018 - Triplane - Anchors & Kingpost |

The task was to fashion the "anchors" out of steel tubing. The anchors are welded to the fuse and are for the wire and turnbuckle bracing. There are 28 or so of them. My friend Jim G. who is building a Fokker D7 had already made his anchors. He suggested bringing my tube stock over to his house and he'd show me how it's done. Sounds good so I did. The trick is heat a section of the steel tube with a torch and then use the lathe to turn it into a small circle. Check out the picture. Here the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words rings true.

Once the steel tube was turned into a curly cue, it was a simple matter to cut it into quarter segments. Here Jim is using a grinder with cutting wheel to cut.

Back at home, it was merely a matter of welding the anchors to the fuse. This section reminds me of the double arches at Arches National Park.
I was happy with the welds on the anchors. Those anchors aren't coming off. Plus no doubt they strengthen the fuselage itself.
The fuse is now ready for some wire and turnbuckle action.
Back at the end of the fuselage, I welded the kingpost as shown, along with the two steel U-shaped brackets.
