February 21, 2013 - Finish Spar Table
I had never really finished the spar table. Now that I was ready to glue the spar flanges together, I needed the spar table done. First steps were to mount the steel angles. I needed to drill 21 quarter-inch holes on each steel angle. There was no way I was drilling through steel with the hand drill. I put the drill press on the spar table and jacked up the steel angle as shown. This worked pretty well. I applied oil into the hole as I drilled so my drill bit didn't overheat.

After all 42 holes were drilled, I
bolted the steel angles to the tables using six inch long quarter-inch
bolts. Then I cut 21 pieces of 1"x2" oak strips and drilled holes in
each end. The end result looks like the below. All this is per
the Sands plans. The purpose of the oak strips is for clamping
the spar components down when glueing.
