June 29, 2011 - Sedona, Arizona

I got up early and made a solo-flight -- Lynnette doesn't like that kind of flying.  There was another RV on the ramp besides mine.

First I flew over by Mystery Valley.  The red arrow points to where we had lunch yesterday.

Unfortunately, the air was a little misty and there was a big cloud formation blocking the sun, so conditions for taking aerial photographs were not good.

The Totem Pole from the air.

The sun poked out to the west of Monument Valley so I was able to get a fairly decent shot of this butte; however, it is not really in Monument Valley.

What a difference the sun makes!

Walking back to the lodge from the airfield, the sun trying to come out made for a nice picture.

Lynnette and I had breakfast in the Lodge restaurant -- usually I have no problem putting away a breakfast but not this one.  Althought the food was delicious, there was just too much.

We loaded up the plane, took off and headed southwest towards Sedona.  On the way we passed this meteor crater.

Turning from base to final at Sedona.

Short final.

I didn't really know much about Sedona and wasn't prepared for how scenic it is.  This picture is from an overlook just near the airport.

I had arranged for a rental car from the airport office.

We drove down to Red Rock State Park to do some hiking and see Cathedral Rock.

Oak Creek runs through the park.  In fact, runs through the city.

It was nice being around some water after the last two days of desert.

The red rock of Sedona

We left Red Rock State Park and headed northeast to check out Slide Rock on Oak Creek.  But the park was full so we ended up just picnicking by the river which was nice.

Some kids were having fun jumping off the rocks into the river.

Back on the road

We drove south of town to see the Chapel of the Holy Cross which was very impressive.

This is the view from the church.

Lynnette on the walkway leading up to the church.

Looking down from the church was this private residence which has to be one of the most amazing houses I've ever seen.

Another view from the church.

A cactus garden

A little further down the road was Courthouse Butte

We were staying at the Sky Ranch Lodge which is just a little ways away from the airport.

The Lodge rooms and ground were very nice.  We enjoyed swimming in the pool (left side of the picture).

I splurged a little and got a "View" room.  This was the view from the patio outside our room!

Lynnette writing postcards on the patio.

We drove downtown in the evening, walked around, and had a nice dinner outside while the sun set amongst the red rock cliffs.  Very nice.  I had Buffalo meatloaf and Lynnette had a Buffalo burger for dinner.
