September 30, 2012 - RV-3 Checkout at Merlin, VA

Bruce and I flew down to Merlin Aerodrome (2VA3), southwest of Richmond, to check out an RV-3 Bruce is interested in. 

Overhead Merlin Aerodrome. 

 
It was an hours flight to Merlin which is about ten miles southwest of Richmond.  Merlin is a small airport community grass strip.
 
And here is the RV-3.  Looks like a good one!
 
Fairly simple panel. 
 
The owner pulled it outside to let us hear it run.

A better look at the one of the airport residences.   Must be nice, living next to a runway. 
 
The seller suggested stopping at Hummel Airport, which was on the way home, as they were having a Wings and Wheels fly-in.  So we did. 
 
There weren't too many planes that had flown in.  But there were lots of radio-controlled plans, show cars, boats, and craft booths.   Check out the flying lawnmowers.  Yes, they do fly.   
 
This F-16 was unbelievable.  In the air, it looked like the real thing, sounded like the real thing, and flew like the real thing. 
 
These two stunt planes put on a great show.
 
Here they are, both hovering.

I wouldn't mind having this jag.
 
And of course the DeLorean. 
 
You see a lot of boats on the bay but not too many Viking longboats!
 
This boat is an exact replica of the one Captain John Smith used to explore the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries for four months in 1608. 
 
 
Magnificent Ryan PT-22 Recruit "Miss Cherie" with a Kinner radial engine.  The PT-22 was the Army's first monoplane primary trainer. 
 
And there is that yellow Cub that keeps following me around. 
 
 
We crossed over to the Eastern Shore on the way home and did a little scenic low-level flying. 
 
 
 
Crossing the Bay back to Essex.  It's always good.
