AirVenture 2012 - Transit To

I left Essex Skypark Sunday morning and stopped at my usual Oshkosh stop, Porter County airport in Valparaiso, Indiana, -- just to the southeast of Chicago -- for gas and some food.  The gas prices were almost the same as my home airport, and the local EAA Chapter always has a food tent sent up during AirVenture week.   Then I continued on.  Here I am approaching Chicago over Lake Michigan.

The rectangular piece of land formerly known as Meigs Airport.

Some big yachts down there.

There were lots of Chicagoans at the beach on this hot summer day.

It was an easy hour flight from Porter County to Oshkosh.   I was lucky coming in; airplane traffic was light.  There was only one other airplane in sight ahead of me -- a Cessna -- which I followed to Fisk and then the approach to 27.

Here I'm approaching Wittman Field.

Although it is Sunday and the show hasn't even started yet, I was amazed to see the North 40 already filled with airplanes.

Even the area north of runway 9/27 is almost filled up.  There was still some room in homebuilt parking/camping luckily.

Cleared to land on runway 27, green dot (halfway down the runway).

A few minutes later, parked and tied-down in homebuilt parking.

Looking to the southeast across a sea of RVs.

Bruce flew into Milwaukee commercially, then rented a car and drove here.  We camped in Camp Scholler so we would have a parking spot.

The nearest shower building was a good distance away so we usually drove to it.  The little building on the the right was a WiFi station where you could get connectivity for your laptop; no charge.
