May 9, 2015 - Massey Aerodrome Chili Fiesta Fly-in

The event for today was one of my favorite: the annual spring Massey Aerodrome Chili Fiesta Fly-in.   For most of the week, the weather forecast had looked excellent, and I thought there would be a huge turnout for the fly-in.  But a low overcast marred this Saturday morning.  Fortunately, it was supposed to break up around noon.  I delayed my takeoff a few hours, then headed east across the Bay.  Here I'm flying up the Chester River.

The surface of the Chester River was like glass.

It was a short jump from the end of the Chester River to Massey Aerodrome.  The morning overcast had effected the turnout.  As you can see, not too many airplanes have flown in yet.

Mark M. taxiis in in "Chippy", his newly restored Super Chipmunk.

Along with the airplanes, there were a bunch of classic cars.

The turnout in the hangar containing the food was just fine!

More planes came in after me.

The primo parking spots where they always line up the classic planes.

Various and sundry airplanes lined up alongside the field.

RVs were lined up in a row.  Decent showing from RV nation.

From the other side.

The 30 hours I spent polishing is paying.

Glen S.'s RV-8 has one of my favorite paint jobs.  Pre-WWII, US Navy.  He calls his plane The Devestator, after the Navy's Torpedo Bomber.

I havn't seen this RV before.  I like the paint job.

I have seen this classy RV-8 before but I don't know the owner.

Another new one to me.

They do a little soaring here at Massey.

Dan and Karl taxi out in the Sea Rey and Challenger respectively.

The inside of the administration building has filled up with aviation memorabilia over the years, including this full size Wright Brothers glider replica.

They have one of the best aviation book collections I've ever seen.

The first time I ever came to Massey, with a group of Citabrias -- the Trunk Monkeys -- Jim Douglas showed us around and explained their goal was to create a grassroots aviation haven.  I think they succeeded.

Colorful Yak-50.

I just saw the Smoketown 1929 Fairchild 71 down at Sun 'n Fun a few weeks ago.  They are really flying it around which is great;  airplanes are meant to fly, not just sit on the ground.

I've seen this Kolb ultralight many times before.  I'm glad to see the ultralights still out there flying.

Another Kolb down by the field.

That's one intense fan to paint his airplane in the colors of his favorite team.

I gave a couple of Young Eagle flights so I was one of the last to leave the fly-in.  Even the Super Cat left ahead of me.

On one of my Young Eagle flights, I flew alongside "Chippy" for a few minutes.

One of the nice things about the Massey Fly-in is that they have some very excellent photographers who take pictures of every plane that flies in, and later post them on the Massey Aerodrome Web page.  All the following pictures were taken by someone other than myself (that will explain the outstanding quality!).

"Chippy" claws for altitude.

Mugsy makes a low pass.  Smoke on!

The Yak-50 turning and burning.

The beautiful 1929 Fleet Model 2 levitates above the runway.

Chippy taxiis in.

My arrival at Massey.

SeaRey and Challenger formation takeoff.

Look Ma, no hands!

Taking off with a Young Eagle.

Thanks to whoever took this great picture of my plane.  I think it's the best ever of my plane.

The Fairchild heads for home.

What a great shot.

I took the indirect way home to do a little fun flying.

Rounding the bend on the Eastern Shore, heading for home.
