February 6, 2011 - Cape May

Today I was meetin gup with Bruce R. and  flying to Cape May, New Jersey for breakfast/lunch.  As you can see, there was still snow on the ground at Essex Skypark.

The taxiiway in front of my hangar was covered with a inch or two so I had to leave footprints on each side so I could see the taxiway sides while taxiing.

Heading east over Miller's Island.

A 737 flies overhead coming in from the north.  I'm under the BWI Class B airspace so I'm good.

Over the Eastern shore, there was a huge flock of white birds -- seen in the middle of the picture.

I redezvoused with Bruce R. around Ridgely and then we continued east.  Here we are passing over Dover Air Force Base.

The Air Force's big C-5 Galaxies are based at Dover AFB and are easily seen below.  They are huge!

Dover Speedway.

Continuing east across Delaware Bay and then south, we came to Cape May airport (KWWD).  During World War II, the U.S. Navy trained all its dive bomber pilots here.

Pretty good-sized airport.  It has an on-field restaurant where we had breakfast.  There is also a museum, which I've been too before, but it was closed today.

After takeoff, we headed to the southwest tip of New Jersey and flew counter-clockwise up the coast.  Cape May is a scenic, resort town.  It has been written up in PIlot Getaways magazine.  Lynnette and I have to fly here for a weekend one of these days.

The flying weather was fairly decent, a little hazy.

I'm guessing that thing on the beach is some World War II fortification.

The Jersey Shore.

Just keep following the beach and you'll come to Ocean City, NJ,  Atlantic City, and eventually the big apple New York City.

But we broke it off and headed back to the Maryland/Delaware eastern shore.   Here I am overhead Eagle Crest Airport, which is an airport community just a few miles from Point Lewes.  Doesn't look that good in the winter when the grass is brown.

A friend of mine from work recently moved to the Eastern Shore so I flew over hi shouse.

Back at Essex Skypark, the taxiway snow had melted and there was literally a lake in front of my hangar.

I might be able to catch some fish in that!

I put the RV in the hangar and headed home to attend a Super Bowl party.  GO PACK!!!!   (I'm not really a Packer Fan but I do dislike the Steelers)
