May 14, 2004 - National Air and Space Museum

Today was the long and eagerly awaited visit to the brand new National Air and Space Museum Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport, south of Washington D.C. As you can see, my Dad was pretty excited about it.

Speaking of museums, here is my list of great aviation museums:

Here are some I'd like to visit:

Basically, the museum consists of one long giant hangar. In fact, they call it America's Hangar. There are lots of airplanes to look at, either from the ground floor or skyways. Cool planes included a Focke Wolf 190, Hawker Hurricane, P-38, P-47, Arado 234 jet bomber, Langley Aerodrome, Bob Hoover's Shrike, SR-71 Habu, F4U Corsair, F6F Hellcat and JU-52. There wasn't much in the way of models, displays or reading material. They have an IMAX theater and the obligatory gift shop.

Because of the lighting, most of the images didn't comeout very well.

This is the new Joint Strike Fighter (F-35), VSTOL version.
I think this is the first Focke-Wolfe 190 I've ever seen. Next to it was the first jet bomber, the Arado 234.
Gliders, ultralights and hang-gliders were well represented. Here is the famous weedhopper. I once heard one weedhopper tell another pilot "you know you have enough airspeed to take off when your nostrils flair!"
This is the wall of fame.
