October 1-2, 2009 - Salmon Fishing in Oswego, NY

If you recall, a little over a year ago I drove up to Oswego, NY to do my transition training with Mike Seager at EAA Chapter's 486 Fly-In.  Link  I had been impressed by the big Salmon that were in the Oswego river.  So my friend from work, Joe M., who is a big hunter and fisherman, and I decided to fly up there are catch us some salmon!

So on Thursday, we left work around noon, headed to the airport and loaded up the RV.

The forecast wasn't great but it was doable VFR.  I predicted we would have a solid overcast by the time we crossed the Susquehanna and I was right on.  We had to dive through a hole and stay under the layer for the rest of the trip.

Hey, where's the RV grin?

Ah, there it is.  A two-fer.  That's a fishing pole in the middle there.

Passing alongside one of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York.

Approaching the town of Oswego with Lake Ontario beyond.  That's the Oswego River which runs right through the town.

Looking back south.  We would do our salmon fishing in the middle of the picture area.

The heart of the town of Oswego.

Turning tightly over the dam.

Less than two hours after this picture was taken, we would be wearing waders and fishing where the arrow points.

On Friday, we would fish from the walkway where the arrow is pointing.

Fulton County airport (KFZY) was about 7 miles south of Oswego.

The plane is unloaded and tied down.  Let's go fishing!

The Enterprise rental car people picked us up and took us to their office in town.  We got our car, got our fishing licenses and some gear, and hit the river.

We put the waders on and fished for a couple of hours Thursday afternoon.  No luck.  Friday morning we were back at it, this time fishing from the walkway.  The sun was out in the morning but the sky gradually clouded up.  Here's an action shot of Joe fishing.

Your's truly.  Keep in mind I'm a flyer, not a fisherman.

There were quite a few people fishing.  It was kind of cold here in Oswego.

Joe and I didn't catch any fish.  Joe had a couple on the line, but it was difficult to land the big, powerful fish.  But a couple of people did manage to get some, as pictured here.

You can't say we didn't try.

We stopped around 1PM.  Our timing was perfect because it started raining soon after.  The rental car people drove us out to the airport where we had a good lunch at the airport restaurant Melony's Landing.  We loaded and fued the RV in light rain, then flew headed for home.

Two hours, and some medium turbulence later, we were safe on deck at Essex Skypark.  Despite striking out with the fish, we still had a good time.
