Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

On the south side of the Thames is a replica of Shakespeare'sGlobe Theatre.  It also has a nice museum.  They put on a very good tour which is quite interesting.  Unfortunately they are doing quite a bit of maintenance on it while we were there so scaffolding was all over the place.

The stage.

Three levels of seating surround the stage.  Yes, there is no roof.  The center of the theatre is open to the elements.

The ornate ceiling above the stage.

The roofing around the seating area is made of thatch, just like the original.

Just like theatre's today, the Globe was built to make money.

There were no lights -- plays were held during daylight hours.  There were no restrooms either.
